How to Measure Your Bathroom for a New Vanity: A Step-by-Step Guide

4/28/20252 min read

Upgrading your bathroom vanity is one of the most impactful ways to refresh your space. Whether you're replacing an old unit or installing a brand-new one, accurate measurements are crucial to ensure a perfect fit. At Montecana Vanities, we believe in making this process as straightforward as possible. Here's how to measure your bathroom for a new vanity:

Tools You'll Need

  • Tape measure (25-foot recommended)

  • Paper and pencil for notes

  • Calculator

Step 1: Measure the Width

Start by measuring the length of the wall where you plan to install the vanity. Vanities typically range from 24" to 72" in width. To ensure comfortable movement, especially in smaller bathrooms, leave at least 18" between the edge of the vanity and the centerline of the toilet. If you're replacing an existing vanity, measure the width of the current unit, including any countertop overhang.

Step 2: Measure the Depth

Measure from the wall to the front of the space where the vanity will go. Standard vanity depths range from 17" to 24". In smaller bathrooms, a shallower depth may be necessary to maintain clearances for doors and drawers. Ensure there's at least 30" of clear floor space in front of the vanity to allow comfortable movement.

Step 3: Measure the Height

The standard vanity height is between 30" and 36". Comfort-height vanities, typically around 36", are ideal for taller users, while shorter vanities may be better suited for children or smaller spaces. Measure from the floor to the top of the existing countertop or the desired height for a new unit.

Step 4: Assess Plumbing and Electrical

Take note of the location of plumbing pipes and electrical outlets. If you're replacing an existing vanity, ensure the new one aligns with the current plumbing setup to avoid costly rerouting. For new installations, plan the vanity placement to accommodate these fixtures without obstruction.

Step 5: Consider Door and Drawer Clearance

Ensure there's adequate space for doors and drawers to open fully without obstruction. Measure the swing radius of any doors and the clearance needed for drawers to operate smoothly. This is especially important in smaller bathrooms where space is limited

Final Tips

  • Double-Check Measurements: Always measure twice to ensure accuracy.

  • Account for Overhangs: Remember that countertop overhangs can add up to 1" on each side.

  • Plan for Future Needs: Consider future users of the space and their needs when selecting vanity height and features.
